10 Books for Success With Horse Racing

Horse Racing can be difficult to get started in for the novice learning about form, track conditions and which jockey is doing well at the moment. For those of you looking to get a leg up here is list of ten of the best books to help you improve your knowledge of horse racing. This list is totally subjective and opinion of the best books will differ. I invite you to post any other books that you might feel are beneficial to the other members.

1. Handicapping 101: A Horse Racing Primer, Brad Free (2007)

Winning at the races doesn’t mean you need an advanced IQ, but only that you have a basic knowledge of racing mechanics–this book teaches you that. Free’s basics of handicapping are easy for a beginner to understand as well as being a refresher for the veteran horseplayer. This book explains how a horse’s individual characteristics such as health, habits, and degree of ability all come into effect when deciding whether or not to bet on that horse. A horseplayer who learns how to recognize and use the characteristics of the horse can then realizethat winning bets are in his or her future. This primer gives practical ways to pick winners and avoid losers.

2. Betting On Horse Racing, Richard Eng (2005)

Want to be able to go to the racetrack with a group of friends and feel like you know what you’re doing? Want to be able to place smarter bets that increase your chance of going home with dollars in your pocket? Reading this book answers those questions for you. With more than 20 years’ experience in the horse racing industry, Eng focused this book on learning how to bet and how to increase your odds of winning. He doesn’t specifically go too in-depth into handicapping skills. This book teaches you how to read the race forms, which serious bettors use to increase their odds of winning. There is an excellent glossary at the end where the author explains all industry terminology so that you can understand every word he uses to describe the horse racing experience.

3. The Complete Handicapper, James Quinn (2013)

This book can help the beginning horseplayer as well as the experienced handicapper. It has been said that it is required reading for anyone who is serious about placing more winning than losing bets. James Quinn has over 40 years of experience in the horse racing industry and has set out the most important basic handicapping skills he’s learned through those years as well as the new ideas he’s learned in this 21st centuryof thoroughbred racing, all in this one book.

4. How To Turn Any Racetrack Into Your Own Money Machine (And Be Just One of the 2% That Do), Greg Boomer Wry (2005)

The world of horse-race handicapping can be very exciting, and this book helps to open it up to you. It is designed to teach you all there is to know about handicapping horse races, from learning solid betting strategies, to successfully managing your money so you have better chances to succeed. Through it, you will learn skills to last a lifetime. This inclusive book uses very understandable terms which are defined and explained, at times by giving examples. You will learn how to analyze a race by reading and understanding The Daily Racing Form and grading each horse to determine whether or not to bet on the race.

5. Bet With The Best: Expert Strategies From America’s Leading Handicappers, DFR Press (2001)

At the time it was published, it was the most comprehensive book on handicapping thoroughbred horse races to be published in over a decade.With nine different chapters written by nine different authors on nine different topics of the horse racing world, this book will appeal to beginners as well as expert handicappers. Example chapters are Beyer on Simulcasting, Quinn on Class, and Brohamar on Pace. If you don’t want to purchase 9 separate books on these 9 separate topics, then this book will be a good place to start to begin learning about each of them.

6. Betting Thoroughbreds for the 21st Century: A Professional Guide For the Horseplayers, Steven Davidowitz (2009)

This book is the revised and updated third edition to the author’s classic “Betting Thoroughbreds”, first published over three decades ago. The book is so popular and has such dedicated followers among both new racing fans and veteran players, that it has been the horse racing industry standard for handicapping for decades.This newly revised edition explains recent industry changes, such as synthetic surfaces, ‘super trainers’, wagering syndicates, computer software programs, and more. Have you ever looked at the past performance of a horse and wondered what it was doing in the race today? This book will answer that question as well as countless others. Diverse topics such as track bias to trainer intent are among those covered. This industry-standard handicapping book will become a favorite read for beginning horseplayers as well as a welcome refresher for experienced horseplayers.

7.The Best of Thoroughbred Handicapping: Advice on Handicapping, James Quinn (1987).

Quinn’s book contains 48 essays by some of the most knowledgeable thoroughbred handicappers, including Tom Ainslie, Andrew Beyer, William Quirin, and himself. Individual essays explainthat author’s system and give examples of how each works. Some of the systems are too complex to condense into one chapter, and the essays difficult to follow. But generally, the essays stimulate the horseplayer’s appetite to read the original books which are listed in an annotated bibliography. Topics ranging from betting strategy to pace handicapping to visual analysis of the horses in the paddock make this encompassing collection of writings useful to every type of handicapper. If you are looking for a well-rounded book on handicapping methodologies, this may be the one.

8. Exotic Betting: How To Make The Multihorse, Multirace Bets And Win Racing’s Bigger Payoffs, Steve Crist (2006)

“Handicapping a race is only half the battle, betting is the other”. Crist’s strategy teaches the horseplayer to make the most money by betting on numerous exotic bets, including the daily double, exacta, trifecta, quinella, superfecta, pick 3, 4, and 6. Crist says this book is not about picking winners at the trackbut teaches that how to bet is as important as who you like–especially in the 21st-century world of horse racing where new ways to bet such as the superfecta and pick four have surpassed the routine win, place, and show betting of days’ past. Both serious and casual horseplayers will benefit from understanding the strategies and mechanics of making these exotic bets.

9. Modern Pace Handicapping, Tom Brohamer (2000).

“Pace makes the race” is one of the oldest sayings you will hear at a racetrack, and this book is the go-to book on pace handicapping. For beginners, reading about running style will give insight into how the race will be run and which horses will benefit from the likely pace scenario. For experts, the Sartin Methodologychapter sets out a new method of analyzing the pace of a race. The author used the Sartin Methodologyto develop his own technique for handicapping horse races. He looked at running styles, turn times, track variants, energy distribution, and par times in predicting race strategy and outcome. Daily Racing Form charts are placed throughout the book.

10. Ainslie’s Complete Guide to Thoroughbred Racing, Tom Ainslie (1988)

This third edition is referred to as the “most complete, comprehensive and reliable guide to handicapping and understanding thoroughbred racing”. Even though some of its ideas may sound outdated by today’s racing standards, countless generations of people cut their teeth on the basic handicapping skills Ainslie teaches–skills necessary to help you become ‘expert handicappers’ and to be able to consistently pick winners at the track. Some of the basics the author covers are class, distance, form, speed, track conditions, jockeys and trainers, and breeding.

All About the Electric Wheelchair

George Johann Klein invented the electric-powered wheelchair in the 1950s. Considered as the most productive Canadian inventor of the 20th century, his other notable inventions include the microsurgical staple gun, the ZEEP nuclear reactor, the Canadarm, and the Weasel all terrain vehicle. Klein was working for the National Research Council of Canada when he came up with the electric wheelchair which was meant for injured World War II veterans.

In 2005, the first successfully working electric wheelchair was welcomed back to Canada during the official launch of Klein’s biography in Ottawa. The chair had been given to the government of the United States in 1955 in a gesture to demonstrate the commitment of Canada to help disabled individuals all over the world. It is now displayed at the Canada Science and Technology Museum.

The electric wheelchair has been dubbed as Canada’s Great Invention. Its development was spurred by the influx of veterans of the Second World War who had become disabled by injuries sustained in battle. The concerted efforts of the National Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Paraplegic Association, and Canada’s Department of Veteran Affairs resulted in an electric motor propelled wheelchair that was actually useful.

Before the advent of this type of wheelchair, quadriplegics had no way to move around by themselves. A little earlier, Canadian Paraplegic Association founder John Counsel had successfully lobbied the Canadian Government for the mass purchase of manual wheelchairs. This helped paraplegic veterans but not quadriplegics. Dr. Klein, in collaboration with medical practitioners, patients, engineers, and scientists, then moved into the breach by originating the concept of the electronic wheelchair.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on August 15, 1904, George Klein became an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1968 and was later inducted to the Canadian Science and Technology Museum Hall of Fame (in 1995) because of his work on the electric wheel chair and other noteworthy inventions. He died on November 4, 1992 in Ottawa at the age of 88 years.

His inventions, however, keep him alive in the memory of people all over the world, especially of those who are enjoying the independence and mobility that he made possible through the electric wheelchair. Today there are many adaptations of this kind of wheelchair, which has been customized to the different needs of individuals. Rear, centre, front wheel and four wheel drive variants are presently available.

Originally meant for quadriplegics and invalids who can not self-propel a manual wheelchair due to certain disabilities, the electric-powered wheelchair is now also prescribed for persons who have cardiovascular conditions. It can be designed for use indoors or outdoors, or for both. There are portable models and full featured “rehab” models. There are kinds that have on-board chargers while others have separate chargers.

The electric wheelchair is controlled by means of joysticks or other kinds of devices such as chin controls or puff/sip scanners. These controllers can regulate not only the chair’s speed and direction but also other functional movements, such as recline, tilt, seat elevation, and leg elevation, that make its occupant able to perform certain motions and activities that would not have been possible otherwise.

The Seven Basic Types Of Demonologist

Have you ever done a search on the internet hoping to find someone like the late “Ed Warren” and you Get someone like “Aleister Crowley”?

(This can happen even when you seek “Demonology” course material too beware!)

Part of the problem is the term “Demonologist” can mean different things.

Consider there IS a GRAVE difference between ones who conjures demons, and ones who seek to rebuke them.

It is a professional courtesy to be clear as to what you do, and who you really are. Rather than to tag “Demonologist” and let people assume.

But here we let you define those who tag themselves as “demonologist”, by the knowledge, practices, habits, affiliations… etc.

1) STUDENT DEMONOLOGIST – One who studies a form “demonology”, is a novice or apprentice of a form of Demonology. A “Demonologist” in the field, is not “one who merely studies them”, avoid taking on such titles as to not confuse people. “Apprentice Demonologist”, “Student Demonologist”, and “Student of Demonology” for example are appropriate labels. The ‘prefix’ is key so as to not confuse the ‘learner’ with the “Veterans”, and people who are considered to be top names, and experts in the field. The mainstream public will contact a guy calling himself a “demonologist” not realizing he/she is merely a “student”, “in training”, who is NOT a well seasoned Veteran, and is unduly wearing that label.

People are being mislead and confused.

2) DEMONOLOGY HISTORIAN – A historian, or a “scholar” on the topic. The historian is more the engineer” not apply the knowledge to practical application and solution.

Where #6 and #7 are the “Technicians”, encompassing both knowledge and practical application and problem solving. – Dr. William Bradshaw ph.d, could also be rightfully called a “Historian Demonologist.” My Father Gerald retired form the field work when I was in third Grade


Typically those of Protestant Denominations – This is one who has primarily learned from the KJV Bible as their source of information on “Demons” – This knowledge applies more towards “Spiritual warfare” in temptation stages. Controversially, they often share a belief that “all ghost are demons”, which they cite is scripturally based, although it is not shared with their catholic and orthodox brothers and others. Such individuals often go on to study separately under a “Historian”, and “Religious demonologist”, or a “Catholic or Christian Demonologist”. As to better understand the process of and the ‘legwork’ relating to ‘field investigations’ for cases of paranormal activity, in potential hauntings, infestations and possessions. This is essential because the bible is vague about many facts in spiritual warfare. Many “Biblical Demonologist” also consider themselves an “Exorcist” by default, typically this is more common with individuals who do not belong to a valid and organized (larger) Denomination of faith. As an “Independent” Christian Denomination, it is easy to award oneself such titles without an overseer or church hierarchy, as they are their own ‘Bishop’ or ‘Pope’ and can do what they please…

For those of the Catholic/Orthodox – Along with their Orthodox bibles, this is also including “Sacred tradition”, and the writings of the Saints for their resources. And such individual are considered by the church as a “spiritual warfare ‘counselor”, or a “Spiritual warfare specialist” if they only work to educate the people. They do not use the word “Demonologist”.

4) NECROMANCER – Well as you know, this is one who conjures demons to do their own bidding, the black arts practitioners, etc.. This is the more common definition for “demonologist” prior to the introduction of the title “demonologist” into the mainstream before 1990 in reference to a “Ghost Buster”.

5) “SOLOMONITES” – Be especially aware of people teaching this material in their “Demonology course”! OK “Solomonities is my own word for them but, these are ones whom consider the Gnostic text The “Keys of Solomon”, as legit, and expect to do work in spiritual warfare calling demons to do battle against demons. Anything with the likes of “Aleister Crowley”, or “Goetia” associated with it is to be avoid. And are considered as #4, as “Necromancers”. Fans and followers of the book by Michael Laimo. “These Demonologists”, are not “Who ya gonna call”? or want to call… There is a certain level of ignorance in people learning this Demonology from the perspective of the enemy. Yet they believe it applies to Exorcism and Deliverance. Wrong!

The big note about these “Types” are they some of them think they are doing “The Work” from God, but they are really doing it from the perspective of the enemy.

6) RELIGIOUS DEMONOLOGIST – This is the more mainstream title people expect in a “demonologist”. This specific one is the title Gerald Brittle created to describe the unique work that the late Ed Warren did for his book “The Demonologist”. Ed, who was a “Roman Catholic”, wore many hats, as he was an investigator, Parapsychologist, Ghostologist, Demonologist, and was also skilled in interviewing the victims and witnesses. But he also was known to occasionally do house “cleansings” (i.e. forms of “deliverance”). And practice a controversial tactic known as “religious provocation” in order to gather needed evidence to justify a church approved Exorcism. This title more so has passed with Ed’s departure in 2006, however some individuals now tend to use “Religious demonologist” to make them “Non-denomination” Christian. A “Religious Demonologist” typically covers all aspects up to, but not including the actual Deliverance/Exorcism. This is where they then typically enlist in the proper personal, in clergy.

7) Denominational – Specific to a particular faith or legit / organized and known denomination working directly through their church and coming from a perspective related to that faith/denomination. (i.e. “Christian Demonologist”, “Roman Catholic Demonologist”) This individual may or may not also practice what is considered “Religious Demonology” as #6, or merely be an adviser for “demonology” and such related info. Or it may be an embodiment of all 5 of the types listed here. Which does includes #1, because for everyone, the ‘studies never cease’. I have not found that any other of the larger known denominations have practiced using this word “demonologist” prior to 1980. That is, until it became more popular in the mainstream. I think they avoided it as to not be associated with the “Necromancer”, or “Solomonites”, and rightfully so…

a) Roman Catholic Demonologist – All though they might handle cases abroad, the prefix dictates they are under the authority of the church doctrine of their Roman Catholic church and magistrate (i.e. Bishop). (Which means they will not be using “sage”, conducting 3am séances or using other practices against church teachings) It is assumed by default such individuals are somehow recognized by their local diocese in the least their own parish church, although it may not be publicly. The Roman Catholic Demonologist, is what a Religious demonologist is and more. Since he can still move forward in performing to a “deliverance” or (aka minor exorcism) over a person, place or thing. Then they will go to enlist in specially appointed Catholic Clergy “Exorcist”, to take the baton as it is needed. This is usually when it is determined that a higher church authority is needed or the “Roman Ritual” will best serve the situation. Also it is imperative that “Catholic demonologist” need to understand ALL Christian denominations, as to be more effective and to not limit the client based to only the “choir”. NOTE: Currently there is still NO official title in the Roman Catholic church known as a “Demonologist”. The church may only refer to such individuals whom might duly use that title. But that’s about it.

b) Other Denominations – Through their own church they might be a member of a “deliverance team” or prayer group that works with such cases of infestation, possession. Typically led by an ordained minister, for the title “Christian Demonologist”, it is a title used by few. They may sport such titles such as “Deliverance” Minister”, “Faith Healer”, and more recently “Exorcist”. To summarize, these ministers are more often what is describe here as ‘biblical demonologist’ in their knowledge and skills. We also note that they can not represent all denominations, if they so choose, since they do not have access to the sacraments and the Catholic church, which can limit their client base.

Sadly the larger denominations usually stick with their own. So you don’t see a need to be so diverse, they prefer to “preach to the choir”. When going outside the more organized and well recognized churches, it’s a take of good and bad. The good is more diversity, the bad is a question of validity. And many fly-by-night denomination that are spawn every day from ‘Universal Life Church’ bring no more authority of the Jesus/ the church than you or I would have as ‘Laity’.


As in the medical field, we will always be learning new things, sure!

In life we are always learning, but does that mean we are never to grow up? Or that children should label themselves as a “parent” and act as such with another child? Name Titles keep it proper perspective for “Others”… OK bad metaphor, but is it not a dangerous thing for a med school student to begin to handle patients like an MD?

and… There is a Real problem with the Novice immediately hurling his/herself into a “demonologist’s” field of work.

A kid in bible college or in training is not ready to handle cases alone. He/she simply does not have the knowledge or experience. Especially working on cases of Hauntings involving children and potential possession cases because of the possibility of mental health. (And.. all true demonic cases are dangerous)

It should be understood that people *DO NOT* consider a “demonologist” is one who merely “studies” demonology plain and simple. That might be a Wikipedia definition, but it is not what the mainstream understands. So we have to look at it from the majority perspective, the popular public view. Not from Webster’s dictionary.

Saying “nothing” helps to confuse and mislead people seeking help or advice as to who is the novice or the veteran.

So, in short, the followers of “Crowley”, should not be confused with followers of “Christ”. To all of you out there. Be forthcoming and honest as to your ‘type’, when the label “demonologist” is applicable. Prefix it with the appropriate word so people will not be confused in what you are or claim to be.

Dorothy Parker and The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is a classic American novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and first published in 1925 during the height of the Roaring Twenties in America. The book became enormously successful.

At the time of The Great Gatsby’s release, Dorothy Parker, founding member of the Algonquin Round Table, was thirty-two years old, living and working in New York City, collaborating with George S. Kaufman on the movie script “Business Is Business” and contemplating her second suicide attempt.

The main character in The Great Gatsby is Jay Gatsby, a WWI veteran who desired to be reunited with Daisy Buchannan, the love he lost five years prior. Coincidentally, Dorothy Rothschild Parker’s 1st husband, Edwin Pond Parker II was also a WWI veteran, whose heart was broken by his true love, Dottie. Edwin wanted his wife to move with him from New York to Connecticut. She decided a divorce was in order. She kept Parker’s name.

Dorothy Parker’s ‘best friend’ and nemesis, Playwright, Lillian Hellman, published memoirs in which she revealed that Dorothy and F. Scott Fitzgerald had had a brief affair. One will never know, beyond The Great Gatsby, which of Fitzgerald’s writings were ever influenced by his friend and former lover.

F. Scott Fitzgerald and Dorothy Rothschild Parker had much in common. Both were celebrated and prolific authors who were raised in wealthy families. They attended private Catholic schools (though Dorothy’s father Jacob Henry Rothschild was Jewish). The two had a passion for writing and enjoyed early successes. Both authors thrived financially through the Depression era of the 1930’s.

Dorothy and F. Scott also enjoyed drinking alcohol to excess. Dorothy joked that she once attended Alcoholics Anonymous, but they wanted her to stop drinking right then and there!

F. Scott and Dorothy each led turbulent personal lives. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda was diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder and was committed to a hospital that caught fire, resulting in her death. Dorothy Parker’s 2nd and 3rd husband Allan Campbell (they were married twice) was Bi-sexual and died in bed with her from an overdose of pills.

During their lifetimes, both Parker and Fitzgerald wrote for the Saturday Evening Post and Esquire. Both were screenwriters in Hollywood, though Dorothy was successful in this field (nominated for an Academy Award for co-scripting A Star Is Born), Fitzgerald was not.

Ironically, the central character in The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby went from poverty to wealth before death. While both Dorothy Parker and F. Scott Fitzgerald in their own lifetimes went from wealth and success to struggle before their deaths.

F. Scott Fitzgerald died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of 44 in the middle of writing his final novel, “The Love of the Last Tycoon.” Dorothy Parker attended his funeral… Dorothy Parker also died of a heart attack in 1967 at the age of 73, in the midst of writing her autobiography, “The Events Leading Up to the Tragedy.” Both writers left behind their unfinished manuscripts. Though, Dorothy’s autobiography mysteriously disappeared after her death…

F. Scott Fitzgerald died believing he was a failure because none of his writings came close to the success of The Great Gatsby. Dorothy Parker died nearly penniless after being Blacklisted in Hollywood during the McCarthy Era Commie scare. Dorothy was once quoted as saying, “I’ll never accomplish anything. That’s perfectly clear to me.”

Dorothy Parker’s life and struggles have been captured in films, plays and the author’s one woman show titled, “Dorothy Parker’s Room Enough For Two.” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s life has also been depicted in films – with The Great Gatsby being made into several feature motion pictures including the most recent starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Great Gatsby has become required reading for most every High School student in America over the past several decades; making F. Scott Fitzgerald a household name. As for Dorothy Parker, sadly, many people today do not recognize who she is…


The Value of Annual Re-Orientation

I was an employee with The Ritz-Carlton organization for over 17 years, and believe it or not, every year I attended Annual Employee Re-Orientation — and never got tired or bored with it. Why? Because it was an organizational goal to ensure that the learning was engaging, informative, interactive, and enjoyable.

Now Annual Employee Re-Orientation was a little different from the standard two-day orientation that new employees participated in. However, it will allow you to focus on key issues that need to be reinforced with veteran employees, dedicate more time to the type of questions and concerns that veteran employees want answered, and create the basis for holding them accountable for driving excellence in their daily work.

Bottom-line, Annual Re-Orientation is a process that many organizations cannot afford to ignore. If done effectively, the upfront investment in time and money will be quickly recouped in employee engagement, customer loyalty, and internal cost-savings.
